The Green Chemistry Commitment (GCC) helps participating colleges and universities bring new levels of momentum and structure to their green and sustainable chemistry teaching and research efforts. Signers to the GCC gain valuable resources, the support of a vibrant community of fellow signers, and accountability measures to help keep their efforts on track.
According to the GCC 2025 Status Report, 52 institutions joined the GCC community in 2025, bringing the total number of signers (as of December 2025) to 264. Early 2026 has already seen that number grow.
In particular, the report shows that the GCC significantly expanded its international reach in 2025:
- 37 of the 52 new GCC signers are institutions outside the US
- GCC now includes member institutions from 36 countries
- Added in 2025: France, Malaysia, Mexico, the Republic of Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe.
"Being part of an international network has already boosted student motivation. They feel that they are not alone in trying to ‘change the world,’ and that they are part of a global movement." - Participant feedback, Green Chemistry Commitment 2025 Status Report
The report also includes updates on the broader range of activities that that GCC and its members undertook throughout 2025. These include:
- Data and anecdotal information reflecting the status of green chemistry education at participating schools
- Brief profiles of the 8 institutions that won a 2024-2025 Green Chemistry Education Award
